Writing the Intended Message

Leslie Brooks, author and actress

Episode #70

Guest Speaker ~ Leslie K. Brooks

“I think that in any place you can put yourself in the trenches is a way to immerse yourself, that you’re immersed in something. … I agree, words have power and you have to choose your words carefully.”
– Leslie Brooks

Our words have power. That statement can have various meanings. How aware are you of the words you casually speak and write without giving it too much thought? There are the words we use to relay a message, tell a story, inform and instruct, and the words we say to Self have the grandest power.

While listening to this episode during the editing process, I noticed Leslie Brooks and I focused a lot of energy on the phrase, “words have power.” Another point that was brought up enough to catch my attention was how our words are interpreted and if people read the intention of the message.

Leslie Brooks is the author of Education Aggravation: A Retired Teacher’s View from the Trenches A Call to Action. In 2002, Leslie decided she had more to offer than just acting, her first career, and it was time to grow. She went back to school, earning her MA in teaching and special education. Leslie taught Special Education in all subjects (grades 3-11) and Public Speaking to regular education students.

Hare are a few of the topics we talked about in this episode:
.:. How a first draft rant can fuel the story.
.:. What is an “organic writer”, and do they use outlines when writing.
.:. How the idea of being rejected influences some writers.
.:. Why Leslie felt it was important to write her book.
.:. The importance of hiring an editor.
.:. Who she allowed to read her book prior to it being published and why.

Pour a mug of mint tea for yourself and enjoy our conversation about the power of our words.
